Adventures of a First Time Camper

I finally went camping!  In all of my 32 (yikes) years, I have never slept out in the wilderness without a comfy hotel room surrounding me.  It was an experience.  When we first drove up to our tent cabin in the Santa Cruz Mountains, a half dozen pesky critters…aka 10 year olds…were running in and out of our cabin.  I guess camping = letting your kids do whatever they want?  It was getting dark, so we quickly unpacked, changed, made a fire, and grabbed some beer.

The first nights sleep was okay. Poor Jay was freezing.  But for some reason I almost always become a human furnace at night.  I’m surprised there wasn’t steam coming out of the sleeping bag.  But the constant moving of the air mattress made me miss some zzz’s.

We got up around 6:30 and started breakfast.  I attempted to make coffee.  Who knew you couldn’t heat up a coffee pot on a grill…booo!  At least the grill worked for our breakfast.  Jay cooked us up egg, cheese, and bacon sandwiches.

After breakfast we were ready to hike!  Big Basin State Park in the mountains is known for it’s Redwood trees.  They were some HUGE ones.  The biggest ones are about 2,000 years old.  Crazy.

We hiked on a few trails, then Jay’s foot started hurting pretty badly.  We drive into Santa Cruz to check it out.  The best part was the Sea Lions!  They were all over the wharf getting some sun.

Then we went back to make our big meal of the trip.  Jay is awesome on the grill and made a tasty steak dinner.

I may have scarfed down a pack of Dunkaroos for dessert.

After snapping a couple pics of our cabin and the huge …mostly burnt… tree it was time to go!  Back to civilization, and my own bathroom!  Have you camped before?
