Will Hike for Food

This weekend was great! I just wish it could be a little bit longer. We started off on Saturday with a hike in Samuel P. Taylor State Park. There are many creeks in the park where salmon spawn. Unfortunately, we are going to have to wait about a month to start seeing it.

It’s also full of Redwoods! Some parts of the hike were sunny, some filled with trees. We were hiking for almost 3 hours. It was so nice to be out in nature! But by the time we were almost done, my tummy was rumbling!

After lunch we made the short drive to Point Reyes Station and ate at Marin Sun Farms. It’s a great little café/ butcher that has local, organic meats. The chef even grows his own veggies! Jay ordered the lamb burger.  It’s topped with Manchego cheese, Chimichurri sauce, and lamb bacon (YES, lab bacon!).

I ordered a new menu item, Pig & Fig. It was fresh ham with Gruyere cheese, spicy mustard, and fig-thyme compote. It was the BEST ham sandwich I have ever had in my life. The salty ham, nutty cheese, horseradish-spiked mustard and sweet fig spread were the perfect combination.

Since the sandwiches came with salads we ordered a side of fries to split. Not just any fries…pork fat fries! The fries were very good, but tasted the same as any other fry to me.

Saturday night we saw Dark Shadows. Sorry Johnny Depp, the movie was pretty bad. Then Sunday we did tons of grocery shopping and Jay cooked up some great dinners for the week. Love when he gets in his cooking modes! What did you do this weekend?

Yup, Another Vacation

I’ve been so spoiled! Since we moved to California everyone wants to come visit…and that means vacation time for me, woohoo. This time, my sis stopped by for a week of fun. Here are the highlights of our Bay Area adventures. First stop, Trader Joes! Andrea has never been to one before.

One day we went hiking in the Marin Headlands. We had some gorgeous views of the Golden Gate Bridge.

One of her requests was that I make homemade pizza. This one was topped with salami, basil, onions, fresh mozzarella and asiago.

Of course we had to go to wine country!

We spent some time in San Fran too. Here we are on Pier 39. You can see Alcatraz in the background (barely).

Then we wanted some dim sum! We went to a cool spot in Chinatown, Great Eastern. President Obama ate there a few months ago! This one is fried taro with minced beef inside.

This is a standard pot sticker. But OH SO good!

We even had some time to dress Bella up, she loves wearing her scarf :)

Right before her flight home we took a stroll around Union Square.  If you want to do some serious shopping, this seems like the place to go.

I’m gonna miss my sis, but she had to go back to Denver!  She’s working hard to get her food truck, Fist Food, started.  Glad we get to see each other again for Christmas!

Do you get to see your siblings alot?

Beautiful Bacon…I Mean Lake Tahoe

I just wish I had more pictures to share!  We had a quick weekend in Lake Tahoe.  The weather was gorgeous!

One of the most memorable meals of the trip was breakfast at Red Hut Café.  They had one thing on the menu I had to..yup HAD to order.  The bacon waffle!

There were strips of bacon right in the middle of it.  The waffle was really good, the perfect blend of salty and sweet.

Next we went on a boat tour on the M.S. Dixie II.  It was a really interesting narrated tour about the geology and history of the lake.  I couldn’t believe how crystal clear the water is in Lake Tahoe!  They say its “99% pure”.

We saw some amazing views of the lake.

There were so many people boating!

Not pictured…gambling!  We spent more than a few hours each night gambling at Harrah’s.  Lucky for us the last night we ended up winning some money playing craps!  It was such a fun weekend.  I can’t wait to hopefully go back to Lake Tahoe to see some snow.

Would you rather see Tahoe in winter or summer?
