Happy Days in Florida

I totally forgot to post about my trip home to Florida!  It has always been my home, so it seemed so normal, I didn’t really think about writing about it.  But here is my trip in pictures…

I was on a free ticket thanks to all the miles I racked up, but that meant a poopy connection.  I was prepared for the VERY long flight.  I had all these movies with me.  Forks over Knives was so informative!  We Need to Talk about Kevin was probably my favorite.  It was messed up with an unhappy ending, but I like those kind of movies.

I was starving when I got to Philly, and was craving Chick Fil A… haven’t seen one in Cali yet Sad smile

When I finally made it to Florida after 12 hours of traveling, I heard them talk about Red Velvet Cake Ice Cream on the radio, so I  knew I had to track it down.  Let me tell you, it was worth it!

I also cooked for my mom one night.  I made “Skinny” Chicken Parm.  I baked the chicken and topped it with marinara and low fat provolone.  Then I made a quick side of spaghetti squash with roasted tomatoes and a little parmesan.

We got to go the beach twice!  Once at Juno Beach…

… and once at Lantana Beach.

On Lantana Beach, we ate at Dune Deck Café where I had the best Greek Salad EVER!  Maybe I liked it so much because they had so much feta.

Later that night we went to a great sushi buffet!  I was so ravenous I only got one picture in.

The day I went home, I had breakfast with my dad & step-mom at Nick’s Diner.  I was tempted by the vast menu, but opted for the Bananas Foster French Toast.  I can’t resist anything with “Bananas Foster” in the title!

My First Pho!

I can’t believe it took me so long! This Saturday, I finally had pho. Jay & I were craving something reasonably healthy but tasty, and I suggested going to Basilic Vietnamese Grill since I had a newly purchased Groupon. Even though this place is only a few miles from us and 2 years old, I hadn’t heard of it until a few months ago. My foodie radar was way off. It’s a small restaurant and was crowded, but we only had to wait about 10 minutes. I loved the metal chopsticks!

Jay started off with a Newcastle and I started off with Chardonnay.

They entice your appetite with a basket of shrimp crackers. These airy, crispy crackers are a great way to start the meal. They have a mild shrimp flavor but nothing crazy.

We had to order an appetizer. They have lots of good options, from wings to calamari. We settled on the Shrimp & Pork Imperial Roll. It was a crispy, thin wrapper stuffed with goodness. The only thing I would have changed is that the sauce could have been thicker and more a little more flavorful.

Now it was time for the pho! I saw a few HUGE bowls of this stuff stroll by me while we were eating our spring rolls. When it was my turn to get one of these bowls of goodness it did not disappoint. I ordered the Beef Pho, which had uber-thin slices of beef sliced rare onto the hot broth and cooks almost instantly. On the side was siracha, hoisin sauce, jalapeno, sprouts, and thai basil. I tasted the broth and it was delicate and fragrant. But I still needed to adulterate it. I added half the sprouts, 1/3 of the siracha, most of the hoisin, and most of the basil…and if the heat wasn’t enough I added 1 slice of jalapeno.

I mixed it all up and it was a bowl full of beefy, noodly, spicy yumminess. After slurping away for about 15 minutes, I was only half way done. For only $9, I got 2 meals out of it, yay! Now that is way better than a value meal.

We will definitely be back to Basilic! Great service, nice atmosphere, and reasonable prices. I wish it didn’t take me two years to go there.

Have you had pho?

A Girl Needs a Good Burger

Jay had to work on Saturday, so we met up for lunch at CG Burgers in Coral Springs. We arrived at 11:50, perfect timing! The lunch rush just started to arrive after us. I was in the mood for something simple, so I ordered the “Pub Burger” a 6 oz Angus burger with your choice of toppings. One that I really want to try on my next visit is the “Napa Burger”, with Goat cheese, arugula, and balsamic honey mustard. They have a variety of patties to choose from, from Bison to Vegetarian.

I got my cup and went to the uber-fancy new Coca-Cola drink station. This is the first place I have ever seen this! They are tons of combinations. I usually don’t drink soda but I could not pass this up! Plus I had a Coke craving. I ended up getting regular Coke Zero with a splash of Chery Vanilla Coke Zero. It hit the spot.

We didn’t have to wait too long for our food, and their high tech number system ensures it gets to the right table. The burger and fries was exactly the right portion I needed. As you can see…I got a burger only with white American cheese. I’m not a big fan of a lot of veggies on my burger. IMO, lettuce is pointless, tomato is too mushy, pickles I want cold. The verdict – the burger was a very good burger, just what I would expect from one these new burger joints. The fries were a little bland, but after salt was added most of them passed the test. There were only a few mushy ones I could have done without. I would for sure go back to CG Burgers for a quick burger fix.

What do you like on your burger?
