Turkish after the Tower

Our our last day of sightseeing (yes, we only had 2 days of sightseeing, it was a quick trip!), we took the “hop on hop off” bus and drove around the city.  We got to see tons of cool stuff along the way!  First was the Tower Bridge.

Next was Big Ben

We couldn’t resist taking a picture of Ye Olde Cock Tavern.

We made a stop at the Tower of London to take a tour.  The Tower is actually a castle, and was built in 1066.  It was used as a prison until World War II, the last prisoner being a Nazi who was captured in Scotland.  It is where many tragedies happened, like Henry VIII deciding it was his wives fault he didn’t have sons and having their heads.  Anywho…it was a really interesting tour and must see in London.

A Medieval Toilet!

And the main prison cell, recreated to look how it did then.  The prisoner used his own money to spruce it up, and even had servants.

Plus I can’t forget the best eats of the day!  Our dinner at Cirrik, a Turkish restaurant in the Dalston neighborhood of London.  It was a small but crowded restaurant.  It took them forever to take our order (but that’s how it is over there).  But it was worth the wait.  Instead of me trying to use different adjectives for delicious on every morsel we ate, I will say it all now…It was DELICIOUS!  Every. single. item.  First up – Turkish Beer!

Of course we had falafel.

…and something I had never had before, Zucchini Cheese Fritters…OH MY!

Jay got the mixed kebab plate.  The man LOVES his meat!

What I ordered was probably once of the best entrees I have ever had in my life.  It was packed with flavor and kept me wanting more even though I was full.  It was Lamb minced with garlic & parsley and then wrapped in a homemade lavosh-type bread.  It was sitting on top of tzatzki-like yogurt sauce under a spicy tomato sauce.

After being FULL and very very tired, we opted to go home for the night.  The next day was the wedding reception, and then we headed home.  It was a short & sweet trip!  But next time I definitely want to stay longer and really enjoy everything.

Where is the next place you want to go on vacation?

  1. haha- there was a Cock Bar in Madrid that we went to just because of the name. It was quite upscale though and we felt a bit out of place!

  2. The Tower of London tour sounds like fun. I’m a hug history nerd and love things like that. Prison can’t be too bad if you have a servant!
My next vacation will be to someplace tropical, but I am dying for a European vacation! I might be going to Poland next year though.

  3. You’re in London?! I had no idea! I live there, so the ‘sights’ aren’t that exciting to me any more haha. Have you been to Covent Garden at all, it’s adorable :)
