Robert’s in Wine Country

Our last night before we got to Modesto, we spent the night in the wine town of Paso Robles (a few hours south of San Fran).  We got in at 8:00 and needed food and wine pronto!  Our cab driver suggested a restaurant, but alas, it was closed.  Right next door to it was Robert’s.  It looked very nice, very clean and cozy, so we walked in and got a table.  I think it’s one of the only places there that closes after 9 on a weekday.

Jay is a happy boy!

We ordered a bottle of a local wine, Osso Libre.  It is a “GSM” wine… a blend of Grenache, Shiraz, and Mourvedre.  I can’t tell you about the bouquet and all that…but I know it was very good!

We also got some bread with a type of “bruschetta” topping, but it tasted more like salsa.  It was kind of odd.  I wasn’t a huge fan.

Since Jay and I were starving,  we thought we would love to have an appetizer.  Since I am a cheese fiend, I was so happy when our server recommended it.  It had Manchego, Irish Cheddar, and Jarlsberg, with crackers, dried fruit, and walnuts.  I’m not a huge fan of Jarlsberg, but I really loved the manchego and Cheddar, especially with a bite of dried apricot.

Jay got a NY Strip with mashed potatoes.  He said the potatoes were amazingly creamy and the steak was cooked really well and perfectly salty.

I ordered the Beef Stroganoff, a dish highly recommended by our server.  It was creamy beefy goodness.  Too bad I was so full on cheese I only ate about a third of it.

This was our last restaurant of our road trip, and the best one!  What a great finale to a hectic 4 days of driving.

What is your favorite type of cheese?

  1. Oh my god that cheese and cracker plate looks so good! I haven’t had cheese in TWO WEEKS SHAAATTT!! I love cave aged blue cheese..and good old sharp cheddar. I am boring..but that stuff is delicious.

  2. That cheese plate looks so gooooood! I love all types of cheese, but if I had to pick a fav I’d say brie – in every way, shape, and form. I could eat my body weight in brie and be a very happy girl.

Isn’t it strange going away somewhere and finding that everything closes super early? When my bf and I went to Vermont in January it was like that. Being from NYC, life starts around 9PM!
