Falafel in my Tummy

I love am obsessed with falafel.  I’m still pissed at myself for not trying it earlier.  The first time I ever had one was about 2 years ago, at Maoz in the Boca Town Center Mall.  I’ll never forget that first bite.  It was spiced up fried chickpea goodness.  There weren’t too many places where you could get falafel near me in FL, but now I have Trader Joes!  When I saw the falafel in the frozen section I almost died. “I can eat falafel every day?!” Oh yes, I can.

They are really easy to heat up! 10 minutes at 325 in the oven and you are good to go.  But, I feel ike I should make something to go with it.  I decided to make a homemade Tahini Sauce (especially since I got a huge jar of Tahini for only $4,99!).  Here is a really simple recipe that turned out delicious (and garlicy).

Tahini Sauce

  • 1/3 cup Tahini
  • 1/3 cup of water
  • 2 tsp soy sauce
  • 1 clove garlic
  • juice of half a lemon

Blend & Serve, that’s it!

Now how was I going to eat it?  Jay was definitely going to make a pita, but I wanted to do something “less carby”.  I cut a spaghetti squash in half, scooped out the seeds, and put it in the oven at 350 for about 40 minutes.  Then I set up my falafel topping station…with Tabbouleh, Cucumber & Tomato (cucs are for Jay, FYI. I hate them, hehe), and hummus.

Jay assembled his pita with a little of everything, it looked GOOD!

I put down a bed of spaghetti squash, and topped it with everything except the cucumbers.

I was honestly surprised how good it was with the spaghetti squash!  It added a great crunch and slight sweetness.  I think I will just eat this every single day.

Do you like falafel? How do you top yours?

  1. Everytime I go to europe, falafels are all over the place!
Doners and falafels, so I must say, I have grown tired of them over the years :)
That being said, your sauce looks AWESOME, and fairly simple. I have never seen a “heat and eat” falafel in the frozen section, but it looks good for the falafel lover.

  2. Wonderful meal! The image of the dish itself is mouthwatering. I envy how much you would have enjoyed making this dish. I guess falafel can also be made at home just like the sauce!

  3. I love falafel, its the best! Weird coincidence – I just posted a chickpea recipe with a tahini dip! Never tried putting soy sauce in it though, sounds delicious :)
