Tacos like a Boss

When Jay & I were trying to figure out dinner last night it took a while! Even though both of us are food $luts, it started raining and we felt kind of blah. Neither of us felt like cooking, even though for the first time in about a week I actually had real food in the fridge. We didn’t really feel like going out either…but one of Jay’s ideas sounded the best… “let’s try that new taco place”.

We made the short drive to El Jefe Luchador (translation: The Boss Fighter), which features “Hardcore Mexican Street Food”. Luckily there weren’t too many people there, because I was taking a while to peruse that menu. The left side of the menu has a “make your own” vibe. It lists the meats on top…they have the typical pork, chicken etc. They also have some cool options like “Al Pastor”, which is steak & pineapple; and “Hongos y Name”, which is Mushrooms and Fried Yams. The preparations include tacos, quesadilla (which is the same as a taco but with lots of cheese), torta (Mexican sandwich), and salad (which I hear is actually really good).
The right side of the menu has specialty concoctions of all of the above…plus some seafood tacos. They ALL sounded good. After we ordered 6 tacos & 1 quesadilla, we sat down and waited for our order.

The salsa bar had 2 salsas, red & green, plus fresh limes. The red was hot and a little too spiced up for me. The salsa verde was perfect! I could drink that stuff.

The carnitas taco smothered in that good green stuff!

Our goodies have now arrived! I had no clue which was which so thank gawd we were near the menu. The only one I could figure out within the first 30 seconds was the El Jefe Luchador Quesadilla which had mucho cheese, grilled pineapple, pico de gallo, and steak. WOW it was amazing! It was spicy, sweet, cheesy and tangy all at the same time. I wish I had ordered more!

The other ones were really good too! There wasn’t one that was just “okay”. These below are the Ultimo Dragon (pork, hoisin sauce, and the missing kimchee slaw b/c jay hates slaw, boo) and the Mahi Taco.

This next one is the “El Santo” with steak, roasted corn, pico de gallo, and fresh cheese… and I didn’t even mention the tortillas yet. They are soft with crispy edges, and not too thick like some corn tortillas I’ve had.

The last one we tried was also one of the best, the crispy shrimp taco. The shrimp were perfect! Of course…the slaw could’ve been good but Jay was scared of it.

I will definitely go back! It isn’t cheap, 3 tacos & chips will run you minimum $10 per person…but the quality is SO worth it.

How do you like your tacos?

  1. So glad you enjoy El Jefe Luchador (I am one of the owners)! My husband and his partner run it! thanks for the great mention!

Have you tried Charm City Burgers? Yum Di Dum!

  2. Love Mexican food and all of that sounds phenomenal! I absolutely love fish tacos. I’ve never made them myself because I never think they’ll taste as good, but when they are made right, oh my goodness…so delish! :)

  3. you had me at “salsa bar!” I like lots of veggies and black beans on tacos/fajitas, with a lot of salsa too! I’m sort of a tomato fiend, hence the salsa love…

  4. this sounds so good! i am making chicken tacos for my dad tonight since he is oblivious to cooking and i think thats the real reason why he invited me over haha i am a sucker for everything mexican and this place you went to has a festive decor!!

  5. I love my tacos anyway! Living in SoCal and family from TX tacos are a staple. I love the fact they are super versatile.. You can even make dessert tacos! My favorite though is just chicken, tons of veggies and some super spicy salsa. Cant beat a classic combo…

  6. Oh man – those tacos look awesome. I’m a big soft shell, corn tortilla taco gal. Usually veggie with avocado, salsa, beans and corn is my favorite. Though I do love a good chicken and/or pork taco every once in a while too!

  7. I love any kind of taco but steak or fish are my favorites. I checked out their fb page and they are in deerfield–hooray–I am so there! Literally, I am coming back to FL this wk and will definitely have to check it out soon.

  8. I just had street tacos last night too! They were carne asada :) Yummy! I actually LOVE any type of fish tacos with fruit salsa and avocado… but I’m a bit apprehensive to order them in Arizona :)
