Beignet of the World

Of course when you’re in New Orleans, you have to have beignets and cafe au lait at Cafe Du Monde. There really is no excuse not to go, because it’s open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. They basically have 2 things on the menu, coffee & beignets. But, really, why would you want anything else?

We found a table quickly and our order was taken in a snap. The servers there really know how to multi task. Just about 10 minutes later our hot cafe au lait and beignets arrived. The cafe au lait was hot and creamy. They make it with half milk and half coffee (they use chicory in their coffee, which is a ground up root. This tradition started during world war II, when coffee was scarce).

The beignets were fluffy and covered with powdered sugar. You have to be careful not to breathe when you eat, so you don’t get powdered sugar everywhere. But definitely don’t wear your best clothes…you will get powdered sugar on them, no matter how well you cover up with napkins. This was the best breakfast of the trip at a classic New Orleans landmark.
