This past weekend we celebrated my Mom’s birthday with a lunch out. I called her a couple days earlier to see where she wanted to go.
Me: Hi Mom, where do you want to go for lunch?
Mom (Cuban accent): You know what I like madre.
Me: How about brunch or maybe Jay can make some of his famous sauce?
Mom (Cuban accent): hmmmm
Me: Want to go somewhere on the beach?
Mom (Cuban accent): Ay si! Tu sabes que I love eeeeeeeeeet!
We went to Sea Watch, which is a restaurant on Fort Lauderdale beach which has been around for over 30 years. My first experience here a few years ago was pretty bad…old décor & a boring menu. But, after reading an article in the New Times, I thought I would give it another go. They had revamped the menu and underwent a huge remodel.
It was about 2:30 on Sunday when we got there and the place was packed! But we were seated right away. We got a comfy booth with a great view of the ocean. They did an amazing job remodeling!
We got our menus and it didn’t take long to see what was on there. The menu is pretty limited and they could use more options. They have no appetizers on the menu…that would have been one thing we definitely would have ordered to share.
The server took our orders and we munched on some whole grain bread. It would have been better served warm, but it was all good to me, I was famished.
Our food took quite a while, and I was starting to get ancy when it finally arrived. I had the Crab Melt. Besides a couple fishy bites in the beginning, it was very good! The French fries were very crispy and hot. It seemed small, but really filled you up.
My mom & sis both ordered the blackened mahi. That was really delicious! It was a huge fresh cut of fish perfectly spiced and served with roasted veggies and fries. Jay ordered the burger (not worth a pic) and said it was of the worst burgers he’s had in a long time.
Now for my favorite part of the whole meal…dessert! We had a Pecan Square, with pour your own hot fudge. It was SO frigging good! The square was warm and sweet with a great taste & texture from the pecans. The fudge was perfect, I could have eaten it on its own.
Overall it was a good meal. They should expand their menu, and watch the kitchen times. The seafood was really good, but definitely don’t order the burger there. I’m glad my mom had a great birthday lunch….she LOVED EEEET!

We have a lot of places around here in southern MD where if the view is good, the food is eh. It’s so hard to find great food with a good view!
Sounds like a great birthday! That crab melt looks so good! I love going to restaurants that have a nice view. It makes the dining experience even better
I want to dive head first into that bread basket.
