Stuff the Pizza

Crappy Happy Monday! How was everyone’s weekend?

Mine had a rough start (got into a fender bender), but the rest of the weekend was awesome! On Saturday we went to Islands of Adventure…mainly to see the Wizarding World of Harry Potter (more on that tomorrow). Sunday we visited my aunt who had a bad stroke over Christmas but is recovering way beyond doctor’s expectations thankfully!

On Friday we made the 3 hour drive from So Fla to Orlando and got there a little later than we had hoped, so going to the Ethiopian Restaurant was out…booo. But, I was happy to see we were staying near a Giordano’s … a Chicago restaurant with a few Florida outposts that is famous for stuffed pizza. It was open until midnight, yay.

We needed vino asap and veered right towards the wine list. It was a pretty meager selection of basics…but the server said they had a Chianti as well. When the hubby asked what kind it was she said, “It’s a good one, from Italy”. I stared at the hubs waiting for his smart remark, and I couldn’t believe it never came! Luckily he waited to comment until after she left the table. I guess she didn’t know all Chiantis are from Italy, oh well! We were surprised when we sipped the wine and it was actually good!

Our stuffed pizza was going to take about 30 minutes, so we started with an Antipasto Salad. It was the basic lettuce, tomato, onions and olives…topped with little cones of delight…provolone, salami and ham. It was a good amount for the 3 of us to split.

Now for the moment of truth…the pizza has arrived! It was an ooey gooey paradise on a plate. Giordano’s deep dish pizza has a thin layer of crust, then super thick layer of cheese (we had sausage in ours as well), then it’s topped with another thin layer of crust with the sauce on top. The stuffed pizza was awesome! It was rich and cheesy without being greasy. But the outer crust was bleh…it was very tough to eat and lacked flavor.

Overall it was a very good meal, but my all time fav Chicago pizza is still Gino’s East…hope to go back there someday to blog about it.

  1. Gino’s East is my fave too in Chicago. But I like Giordano’s in Chicago alright — have you ever tried it there, or just the FL location? B/c I wonder if it was just the FL one that was bad, or if you just don’t like Giordano’s anywhere. Either way, just to be safe, I’ll probably avoid all Giordano’s other than the original. But, oh, that picture of it looks so good!!! Makes me wish I had a Chicago trip in my immediate future (like tonight if possible!).

  2. Sorry to hear about your fender bender! I hope everything is okay! I’ve never had deep dish pizza like that before! It looks delicious. I am dying to get to Chicago to try my first official real deep dish pizza. I’ve heard it’s incredible!

  3. well next time ask the waitress for some Sherry but only if it’s from Spain. nothing like chicago deep dish!

  6. When my current husband was in Chicago – he would swear by Gino’s East. I finally got to go a couple of years ago and tried it – tres delicious!!! I have to just try Giordano’s for comparison purposes but I was in love with Gino’s East.
