One Step Closer to Oprah

Happy Hump Day! I love today for three 4 reasons…

1. I finally went on my morning run. Today I woke up bright and early at 6:30 and ran/walk for 3 miles. I averaged a 10:20 pace today. It’s been a WHILE since I ran. I’ve been bad! I got so pumped when I heard Glee’s version of Don’t Stop Believin’ about halfway through my run. But, a few moments after that, I felt very dizzy (which also happened the last time I ran). Has this happened to anyone? Any fueling tips for early AM runners?

2. The work week is halfway over. Why are days SOOOO long lately? Ugh! I have a great thing to look forward to this weekend…going to Universal Studios in Orlando for some Harry Potter action, oh yeah!

3. Top Chef is on tonight. Hopefully Marcel gets kicked off soon, he is so despicable. This is definitely one my favorite shows right now…my all time favorite is True Blood but the take SO long to get to the next season.

4. I get to see my hubby! Well….I see him every day, but every day is the best when I see him walk through the door after work.

One of my devious coworkers brought this in today…

It was the Chicago Mix from Garrett’s Popcorn, which was featured on Oprah’s Favorite Things show recently. Of course I’m screaming to everyone, “OMG, this popcorn was on Oprah’s favorite things!”, like a little kid. So obviously I had to try it (especially after seeing the hefty price tag) and it was good! The caramel was crispy and not overly sweet. The cheddar was melt in your mouth good…like the cheese invaded every single cell of the kernel. The combo of both of them was outrageously good.

Now let’s see what Thursday brings…hopefully another run!

  1. That popcorn sounds delish. I hate when tin popcorn is all stale and dried out, and yours looks like the complete opposite of that! :)

  2. I could definitely go for some of this right now. I'm considering making some popcorn in honor of today's holiday!

  3. Natalie,

Congratulations on getting up and running. I always ate oatmeal before a run. I know it's early and you don't feel like eating b4 running, but it made all the difference for me! Good job and I will be thinking of you, cheering you on! :-) Cindy (Kathy's friend)

  4. Wednesday is a great day—there are two ways to look at it, and I'm with you—being happy that it's halfway thru the week is best!

Their popcorn looks great—I have never had it though. Maybe I shouldn't start now!

  5. I just went to a running-focused nutritionist's presentation and she recommended 45g of carbs before any morning run lasting over 30 minutes. So within the last couple days, I've started thinking about making some changes to my pre-run foods. Right now, on a weekday (whether it's an hour cross training, 4 miles running or 10 miles running), I eat a quaker granola bar. If it's a weekend run over 11 miles, I eat a packet of instant oatmeal (right now I like this steel-cut apple cinnamon kind, can't remember the brand).

Both of those have worked well for me. I've heard you should always avoid dairy (likelihood of intestinal distress is high), fruit (fructose isn't the fuel you want pre-run), and anything else high fiber (intestinal distress).

This dietician said the one and only time she recommends something like a plain white bagel instead of whole-grain version is pre-run. Your body shouldn't work to process the food, you just want readily-available fuel.

But in my experience, it's a major learning process to find out what works for you! Lots of my friends like half bagels or toast w/ PB, but I can't do peanuts.

  6. Aaaah, I used to LIVE for cheddar and caramel popcorn at Christmastime. The plain popcorn section of the bucket would look so full and lonely!
