Food Fact Friday: Peanut Butter Candy Time

Peanut butter jelly candy with a baseball bat…ok ok.

So now that I’m back to blogging,  I’m restarting the best day of the week, Food Fact Friday!  I’m a little bit of a nerd, especially with food…so I love to research little tidbits about all the foods I love.

January is National Candy Month!  Since it’s my sis’s BIG weekend running in the Disney Half Marathon tomorrow, I decided to write this about her favorite candy…Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups.

They were created in 1928 by Harry Burnett Reese, a former dairy farmer and shipping foreman for Milton S. Hershey. He was so inspired by Hershey’s Milk Chocolate, he came up with the peanut butter cup and other candies. The H. B. Reese Candy Co. was established in the basement of Reese’s house in Hershey, Pennsylvania. The popularity of this treat grew so much in the 1940′s and 50′s, that H.B. Reese then dropped all other candies and only produced peanut butter cups. They merged with the Hershey Company in 1963.

Flavor Fact: Reese’s has produced dozens of special edition flavors of their peanut butter cup, including an “Elvis” which had a layer of banana creme.  It was only available in the summer of 2007, the 30th anniversary of his death.
