The Return of the Mai-Kai

Mai-Kai is a Fort Lauderdale staple that you have to go to at least once! It's kitschy, fun, and has been around for over 50 years. They just finished up some renovations. They have a great happy hour. Also...their full menu is back (thankfully)! Last time I went there, maybe 6 months ago, they had a small menu that was missing most of the dishes I liked the most. That was a bad idea. But Mai Kai finally back to its old self.

We went to eat dinner only (not to see the show), but we came during show seating time so it was a little hectic. When we were seated we got the infamous gazillion page drink (ok..maybe 6 pages?) menu but already knew what we wanted, the Black Magic! It's an awesome drink with rums, different tropical fruit juices, and the magic ingredient...coffee. It sounds weird but tastes amazing. When the drinks first came out, it tasted off. The server came right over and offered to make us new drinks immediately (I guess the bartender was new). No worries though, the problem was quickly solved.

My meal was the Mandarin Pressed Duck, my all time favorite there! It consists of shredded duck pressed into these triangle shapes and fried. It's served with a tangy and sweet orange sauce and fried (or white) rice. The duck is super crispy on the outside and falls apart when you cut into it. It's a little bit on the dry side but the sauce helps that out.

If you haven't gone to the Mai-Kai you should. The food is good, and the atmosphere is one of a kind. I hope it lasts another 50 plus years.
